The Spirit of the Square

Tahrir Square- 2011

On January 25th of 2011, the Egyptian revolution started with thousands of people in the streets chanting the downfall of the Regime of Mubarak, slowly numbers increased as the chanting increased, and they reached Tahrir Square on the 28th of January, thousands of protesters camped in Tahrir calling for Mubarak to resign after 30 years in power. Tahrir in Arabic means liberation, people were hoping for liberation, not only politically but on different levels, Egyptians are very diverse in beliefs, traditions, religion and politics, it’s not easy, rather impossible to gather them together in one pot, but one thing that I and many others touched closely during 18 days till Mubarak stepped out of power was this magical spirit which gathered and connected everyone together.

And here see the words of John Lenon's song Imagine present where the dream came true, where we managed to dream altogether

Imagine there are no countries. It isn't hard to do

Nothing to kill or die for, And no religion, too. Imagine all the people Livin' life in peace You

You may say I'm a dreamer

But I'm not the only one I hope someday you'll join us

And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions I wonder if you can

No need for greed or hunger

A brotherhood of man

Imagine all the people Sharing all the world You

What happened after was not easy, we fight, we hate, and we fall, but we still remember that one day we rose up high in the sky, maybe it was fast enough to make us fall even faster.

May we rise again slowly next time, learn and avoid the fall.
